Topics: (1) Condemnation and Prevention of State-Sponsored Terror and (2) Reparations and Redevelopment of South America
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), is the first committee of the General Assembly, and deals with all matters of arms control, threats to international peace, and all other security related issues. During the Cold War, military dictatorships in South America banded together to oppress their citizens and conduct a widespread cross-border operation persecuting their political opponents. After the Cold war, investigations into this conduct were held, and it was revealed that these nations were backed by global powers such as the United States. Operation Condor is seen as a gross violation of sovereignty and non-interference, and the aftereffects of Condor are still felt to this day. The year is 1998, and now that it has been more than a decade since the end of the Operation, delegates in this committee will be tasked with navigating the legacy of Operation Condor and condemning and preventing future incidents. Additionally, delegates will undertake the effort to potentially provide reparations to those affected, and assist in restoring trust in political institutions in South America.
