Overview
This committee is an advanced committee, it is recommended that participating delegates have previous Model UN experience.
The International Civil Aviation Organization is a specialized agency in the United Nations that establishes global standards and regulations for international aviation. It works with member states to ensure safe, efficient, and responsible air transport practices at an international level. This committee aims to achieve global aviation systems that are beneficial for local environments and economies, addressing the two topics of expanding air transportation into developing regions and promoting environmentally sustainable aviation practices.
Topic 1: Expanding Air Transportation in Developing Regions
Air transport is a powerful driver in economic integration at the international level, yet access to reliable and efficient aviation infrastructure remains uneven. Across the globe, less developed nations are missing out on the economic benefits of boosted global commerce, tourism, and job creation that air transport provides, meanwhile tens of thousands of flights depart in developed countries each day. For landlocked countries, aviation holds great potential in overcoming economic challenges imposed by geographical location. Delegates will address how gaps in infrastructure, high costs, and poor regulatory oversight prevent developing countries from unlocking the potential of aviation and discover how the international community can ensure that air transport serves as an economic catalyst.
Topic 2: Promoting Environmentally Sustainable Aviation Practices
Air transportation and its expansion remains controversial due to the drastically high levels of carbon emissions it produces compared to alternative methods of transportation. What makes this especially unfortunate is that the countries that suffer the most from increased carbon emissions and the ensuing effects of climate change are often the ones that participate the least in global aviation. From researching sustainable fuels to increasing the efficiency of airspace operations, experts are working tirelessly to reduce the carbon footprint of airspace travel. Delegates are tasked with developing sustainable and achievable solutions to make aviation less environmentally destructive.
