Naomi Carolan, Secretary-General
Naomi is a senior at Boston University, majoring in International Relations and minoring in Computer Science. Outside of academia, Naomi occasionally dabbles in Korean, photography, and watching Survivor. In terms of Model UN, Naomi has been staffing conferences and competing on the collegiate circuit for nearly two years, and she is sad to see that this will be her final conference. Model UN has shaped Naomi’s time at BU from her academics to her social life. Naomi has been immensely thankful that the sport (yes, she calls MUN a sport) has not only taught her great skills moving into her career but has also helped her to become a better person. She can only hope to give to the MUN community a fraction of what it has given her.
Nikta Khani, Director-General
Nikta, or Nikki if you prefer, is a rising sophomore pursuing a double major in International Relations and Economics. She hails from Orange, CT, a small suburb outside of New Haven. Other than her involvement in BosMUN and BU's International Affairs Association (BUIAA), Nikta is involved in Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Fraternity and is a Dean's Ambassador for the Fredrick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. Her passion for International Relations is rooted in her close connection to her Iranian heritage (she doesn't stop talking about it). She is bilingual (English and Farsi) and hopes to become fluent in Arabic as well. She is an art aficionado who loves Arabesque and Baroque styles, Klimt, Vermeer, Hopper, and Neshat. In her spare time, you can find Nikta making lists or updating her Google Calendar. She also loves to travel (21 countries thus far). Most importantly, Nikta is excited to serve as the Director General of BosMUN XVII!
Hafzat Akanni, Conference Affairs Director
Hafzat is a sophomore in the College of Communication majoring in Journalism and double minoring in International Relations and African American Studies. Born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Hafzat has spent the last three years living in Providence, Rhode Island — the city where she developed her passion to combat social injustice. As an aspiring civil rights advocate, Hafzat hopes to one day use her experiences to serve as a voice to those who have long been silenced. On her free time she enjoys watching Scandal and listening to J.Cole. Her favorite superhero is The Flash but her heart resides with Marvel Comics. This year, Hafzat is excited to serve as the Director of Conference Affairs for BosMUN XVII.
Elisa Cifiello, Outreach Director
Elisa is a sophomore at Boston University studying in the College of General Studies. She plans to graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences with a major in International Relations in 2020. Elisa arrived at Boston University in January '17 where she continued her involvement with Model UN after 3 years of participation at Needham High School. Moving from Bangladesh, to Israel, to the Boston area, Elisa has always been an avid traveller and adventurer. In her free time, Elisa enjoys hiking and skiing in New Hampshire, driving to Canada, and working on fine arts projects. Elisa has always been actively involved in her local community by lifeguarding, being a camp counselor, working with kids with disabilities at the Charles River Center, and interning with refugees at the International Institute of New England. Elisa is very excited about joining the Secretariat at BosMUN XVII and plans to make a beneficial contribution to this year's conference.
Jahnavi Batia, Operations Director
Jahnavi Bhatia is a junior studying Economics and Journalism. At Boston University, she's the Vice President of CAS Student Government, a member of the Delta Phi Epsilon Foreign Service Fraternity, a columnist for the Daily Free Press and is involved in the Kilachand Honors College and Trustee Scholar communities. Armed with a passion for both, International Relations and event planning, she hopes to make BosMUN XVII super efficient, with all the crises occurring only in committee sessions. As an international student from India, she finds that conferences like these are essential in reminding us that the world is becoming smaller every day, and hopes that BosMUN will leave all of you feeling like true global citizens. P.S. Her go-to fun fact is that she's broken her nose three times!
Azanta Thakur, Technical Director
Azanta is a sophomore at Boston University, majoring in Biology with a focus in Conservation Biology and minoring in Sustainable Energy. When she’s not drowning herself in studies, you can catch her passively aggressively ranting on Twitter, learning a new language, or obsessing over current events. Though she is a born-and-raised Floridian, she loves Massachusetts, including the cold weather. Azanta has been involved with MUN since her freshman year of high school. It changed her life and career track, so she continued with it and since then has participated, chaired, and aided in organizing countless conferences. She is a political and environmental activist, and recently just finished up an internship with Senator Elizabeth Warren. In her limited free time, she loves to listen to Bastille, binge watch Netflix, and read any and all books. She’s looking forward to another fantastic year of BosMUN and is excited to welcome you all in February.
Taylor Cowser, Under Secretary-General of General Assemblies
Taylor Cowser will be serving as the Under Secretary-General of General Assemblies at BosMUN XVII. Currently, Taylor is a sophomore in the Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences majoring in Human Physiology and minoring in Public Health on the pre-med track. Originally, she is from New Canaan, CT and has lived there her whole life. Taylor has participated in Model UN since she was a freshman in high school, and loves continuing her MUN experience at BU. Other than BosMUN, Taylor is a member of BU's Pre-Medical Society and works as an EMT back in Connecticut. She looks forward to working with all of you!
Rachel Kubrick, Under Secretary-General of ECOSOC
Rachel is a sophomore here at Boston University double majoring in History of Art and French, and a minor in Visual Arts. She got hooked on Model UN in her freshman year of high school, and has been attending and staffing conferences ever since. She comes from Long Island, but likes to pretend that she actually hails from New York City. An avid traveler, she went to four different continents in the past year, and hopes to study abroad in Paris. Outside of Model UN, you can find Rachel reading, watching rom coms, or spending all her money on sushi. She is also an avid art museum goer, and has interned or volunteered at several museums and art fairs, most notably the Guggenheim. Rachel is ecstatic to be on the secretariat for her second BosMUN, and cannot wait to help run an amazing conference!
Michael Holtz, Under Secretary-General of Specialized
Michael is a senior majoring in International Relations with a concentration in European Economics, Business, and Politics. Michael is a proud Michigander born and raised, but wanted a change and found a home halfway across the country at Boston University. Prior to life at BU, Michael had no experience in Model UN; but after joining BUIAA his sophomore year, he staffed his first conference and quickly grew to love MUN. Aside from being an active member of the BUIAA community, Michael is also a founding brother of Delta Phi Epsilon International, Boston University's only professional foreign service fraternity. When he isn't obsessing over all things International Relations, Michael can be found at the library watching Netflix instead of studying, drinking absurd amounts of coffee, and exploring the neighborhoods of Boston.
Joanna Wagner, Under Secretary-General of Crisis
Joanna Wagner is a sophomore in the Kilachand Honors College and the Pardee School of Global Studies, where she is double majoring in International Relations and Middle Eastern & North African Studies. She has been participating in Model UN since her sophomore year of high school, and had an absolute field day chairing the Ministry of Magic Committee during last year's BosMUN. In addition to BUIAA, at BU she's involved with CAS Student Government, Delta Phi Epsilon, the Kilachand Leadership Advisory Board and BU Terpsichore, and she hopes to someday work for the State Department. A native New Yorker, she attended Laguardia High School as a vocal major, and attributes everything good in her life to her excessive consumption of pasta and coffee. She can't wait for BosMUN XVII, and is sure that this is going to be the best one yet!
