Overview
The Sustainable Innovation Forum (SIF) is linked to COP 31 as a sister conference, focused on advancing climate action through innovation and private-sector engagement. As a result, SIF has a larger emphasis on solutions that use sustainable technologies and utilizes private firms, stakeholders, and economic strategies to fund sustainable development efforts. Green finance and net-zero methods have been key topics of discussion at past SIF conferences.
Topic 1: Decarbonizing Heavy Industry
The first topic addresses the decarbonization of heavy industry. One of the most pressing issues in climate change is how global carbon emissions can be significantly reduced, as current damages have already reached irreversible levels. Heavy industry, or large-scale oil and steel manufacturing, is not only heavily dependent on fossil fuels for its operations but also generates hundreds of billions of dollars for the US economy alone. Although heavy industry is highly lucrative, it is also responsible for almost a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions and physical environmental degradation such as oil spills, which are quickly propelling the Earth into catastrophic climate consequences. Delegates will have to work to move away from the reliance on fossil fuels in heavy industry that protects not just the environment but also the vulnerable populations that are routinely exposed to its toxins.
Topic 2: Sustainable Global Transportation Networks
The second topic addresses creating sustainable global transportation networks. Global transportation networks are internationally interconnected systems of transportation that support the movement of people and goods. Major methods of transportation include airplanes, ships, and trucks, all of which historically contribute greatly to global carbon emissions. A significant barrier to widespread environmental technologies and alternative methods of travel is the economic dependence states have on the current transportation networks, as both corporations and countries require moving products and exports to support livelihoods. Even with sustainable low emission technologies existing, delegates will have to work to increase accessibility across all countries and find long-term solutions that move away from carbon-emitting transportation.
